Bark Beetle Workshop

Seminar objectives

 

 

Through lecture, lab, and field exercises, the workshop will:

 

-Familiarize participants with basic bark beetle anatomy, biology, and identification  

 

-Expose participants to diverse bark beetle communities, including invasive species, in a variety of habitats and pine forest types  

 

-Explore conditions, scenarios, and strategies necessary for sound forest management

Location

 

The workshop will be held in Flagstaff, Arizona at the Rocky Mountain Research Station. Plant and insect communities in northern Arizona are defined by elevation. Within 50 km, desert, chaparral, pinyon-juniper, grassland, pine forest, and mixed conifer forests can be observed. The site of the workshop is also within 100 km of the Grand Canyon.

Introduction

 

This workshop will emphasize a hands-on approach to learning about bark beetle biology, ecology and management. The target audience for this course is technicians, professionals, and graduate students in a bark-beetle related field of study. Over the 5 day period of the course, participants will spend approximately 60% of their time in a laboratory or field settings developing proficiency in beetle identification and collection.
